Common Questions
Quick answers drawn from the voices on this page.
What jobs exist in law enforcement beyond patrol?
A lot of them. One deputy lists it out: "we're not just patrol. We're not the SWAT team. We're not just narcotics. We have a correctional division… we have a civilian staff, and there's support staff, and there's a lot of different things that we do." Can I specialize in something like a K-9 unit?
Yes — and the partnership is total. K9 Gator's handler describes it: "Basically, I get to go to work and play with my dog every day, and then at the end of the day, he comes home with me… He's a good boy. I have, uh, K9 Gator. We are a certified team, dual purpose in narcotics, tracking, article search, and apprehension." Watch: Meet Our K9 Gator: We Serve the Community Together →.
What does a school resource officer actually do?
She describes it as being part of the school community, not policing it. "The biggest compliments that I ever get is kids saying they wanna be just like me when they grow up... they love playing tag with me and love asking questions about all my gear." Watch: The Reality of Being a School Resource Officer →
Is there room to grow into a specialty like detective?
Yes. One detective describes it: "When you have a conclusion to a case that brings a… victim the closure that they deserve to have, you're gonna get the best enjoyment out of this… the Detectives Division, that's what we're here for." Watch: The Benefits of Serving: Bringing Closure to Victims →.
If patrol isn't for me, is there still a place for me?
Yes. Detectives, K-9, school resource officers, community outreach, training, evidence, and administrative roles are all real career paths inside a single agency. Watch: More Than Just Patrol: Finding Your Role on the Force →.
Can I specialize early, or do I have to do patrol forever?
Most agencies want you to build patrol experience first, but many specialty units actively recruit within a few years of hire. Watch: The Reality of Being a School Resource Officer →.
